Paving the way to net-zero

In its commitment to combat climate change, the Victoria State Government has set an ambitious long-term goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As a state, we have a challenging but crucial task ahead.

Building and construction contribute approximately 66% of the state’s carbon emissions. As forward-thinking players in this industry, Up Property embraces the responsibility of pursuing a net-zero approach.

This concept focuses on eliminating the use of fossil fuels from both construction and operations, resulting in buildings that reduce carbon emissions across their lifecycles.
This approach tackles both embodied carbon (emissions from materials and construction) and operational carbon (emissions from heating, cooling and daily building use). Key strategies include:

  • Incorporating passive design that works with the local environment to minimise the need for heating, cooling, ventilation and light systems.
  • Transitioning away from natural gas and other fossil fuels in favour of all-electric alternatives.
  • Utilising onsite renewable energy sources, like solar arrays, to meet remaining energy needs.Integrating smart technologies that optimise energy use.
  • Choosing low-carbon building materials that minimise emissions.

Achieving net-zero development comes with challenges—higher upfront construction costs, the need for specialised expertise and potential grid infrastructure hurdles—but the long-term benefits far outweigh them. Not only does this approach lead to reduced operating costs, but it enhances resilience to future energy price fluctuations, and positions developers at the forefront of climate change action.

At Up Property, we take our commitment to a net-zero future seriously. Inspired by the challenge and the opportunity to lead the way in sustainable development, we’re thrilled to be partnering with Austin Maynard Architects (AMA) for an upcoming project. AMA are leaders in sustainable architecture, designing spaces that thoughtfully contribute to the wellbeing of people and the planet.

“Our work challenges conventional thinking, proving that sustainable architecture can be both beautiful and responsible”—Austin Maynard Architects.

As we look ahead, we’re dedicated to incorporating this approach into our ongoing projects—ensuring that each new development is not only part of the solution but a step toward a more sustainable and resilient future for our communities.
